South of the Border
Why it's controversial: Frequent travelers of Interstate 95 are undoubtedly aware of the "Mexican-inspired" tourist trap in South Carolina known as South of the Border. With its bandito mascot Pedro and Mexican-themed carnival rides, the attraction has come under fire with Mexican-Americans for cultural appropriation and the exploitation of stereotypical perceptions of Mexican people in America.
Instead go to: The real Mexican border. We suggest going to the Boquillas Crossing from Big Bend National Park (U.S.) and taking the $5 boat ride to Boquillas del Carmen (Mexico).Back to top
