From the northwest edge of Cairngorms National Park, Aviemore provides quick access to the best ski slopes in the Scottish Highlands. But the outdoor hub provides plenty to do in warmer months, too. The wild terrain is rippled with mountains, lochs, and lush forest, and you can explore it either by bombing through the growing network of single track (rent a bike from Full On Adventure) or hoofing it over more than two dozen trails that eat up anywhere from a single hour to a full day. Afterward, you have options. One would be to visit Rothiemurchus Estate, a 10,000-hectare reserve of managed wilderness, where you can spend an afternoon clay shooting or cruising through the moorlands and herds of shaggy Highland cattle on quads. Another option—one that’s equally exciting—is to to drive 30 miles northeast to the Glenlivet Distillery, which marks the start of Scottland’s Malt Whiskey Trail.
