There’s a ski resort in Iran? Really?

When you think Iran, especially these days with all the talk about the ongoing nuclear standoff, the last thing that probably comes to mind is alpine skiing. But the country is actually well-known within the outdoor world for its skiing, and skiers and snowboarders are currently enjoying a long winter season at the Iranian ski resort of Dizin, located only 60 miles from Tehran. The Associated Press has the story:

The ski season at Dizin lasts longer than European ski resorts–December to May–because of its high altitude. The highest ski lift at the resort located in the Alborz mountain range is at 11,800 feet, making Dizin one of the 40 highest ski resorts in the world.

“The quality of the snow is very very good,” British tourist Mike Obden told the A.P.

Remarkably, Dizin is one of the few places where women in Iran can let their hair down, and escape the restrictions about having to cover their hair.

Who knew?
