Adrère Amellal, Siwa Oasis, Egypt
How to get there: 375-mile drive
Egypt’s portion of the Sahara Desert is vast, and accommodations (especially ones with solid walls) are limited. But what makes Adrère Amellal—about 15 minutes from the Siwa Oasis, nearly 400 miles from Alexandria—feel so far off the beaten path is the fact it has no electricity and cell phones are banned outside the rooms. You won’t need them, anyway; the whole point of visiting a place like this is to travel back in time (Siwa is where Queen Cleopatra once swam in hot springs and Alexander the Great was declared the son of the deity Amun). The lodge’s 40 rooms are all carved out of the mountainside and crafted from kerschef, a local mix of straw and salt rock.
