Jade Screen Hotel, Huangshan, Chin
How to get there: 60,000 steps or cable car
Huangshan Yupinglou Hotel roughly translates to the Jade Screen Tower Hotel, but this mountaintop lodge is also called the “hotel on the ladder”—and that’s because you have to climb 60,000 of the Southern Steps on Mount Huangshan, part of the Yellow Mountains in the Anhui Province in China, to reach it. (OK, fine, you could take the cable car up, too.) At the top, the 60-room hotel is surrounded by craggy rocks and pine trees (the most famous of which dates back 1,500 years) and remains shrouded in fog the majority of the time. But on a clear day, you can ogle some of the 70 or so neighboring peaks and experience an unparalleled glimpse into this uniquely isolated region.
