Kulmhotel, Gornergrat, Switzerland
How to get there: hike or open-air railway
Kulmhotel earns its title as the highest hotel in the Swiss Alps. It’s perched 10,170 feet above sea level and takes a five-hour hike or a chilly ride on the open-air Gornergrat railway from Zermatt to get here. But it’s worth braving the elements (and the effort). The panoramic views of the majestic Matterhorn or Mont Blanc mountains are nothing short of epic. And the heart-pounding array of activities don’t stop after arrival. There are nearly 250 miles of hiking paths, 38 13,000-foot peaks to conquer, over 60 miles of mountain biking trails, and over 200 miles of ski runs. Fun fact: The hotel also serves as an observatory, with two huge telescopes in the north and south towers, which means there’s prime stargazing here.
