Sheldon Chalet, Denali, Alaska
How to get there: 40-minute helicopter ride
Deep in Alaska’s Denali National Park, on the side of Ruth Glacier, sits Sheldon Chalet, a mountain house you can only reach via helicopter from Anchorage or Talkeetna. Denali’s peak is barely visible most of the year, but you can’t beat the views from the Chalet, which sits just 10 miles away at 6,000 feet above sea level. There are five rooms, and you’re pretty much surrounded by rocks, snow, and ice—which makes it a great home base for heli-skiing, ice fishing, dog-sledding, rappelling, and glacier hiking. What really puts you in the wild? No TV, no cell phone service, and no WiFi.
