Hamilton Island, a member of the Whitsunday Islands, is a dream destination that many adventurous travelers don't ever make it to because of its remote location off the coast of Australia — about 550 miles from the nearest hub of Brisbane. But thanks to a collaboration between Samsung and Aussie airline Qantas, you can now take a virtual vacation to the tropical locale anytime you like.
The virtual reality experience allows you to take in 360-degree views of the island from aerial, on-land, and underwater perspectives through a special VR headset (which looks like it is straight out of Star Trek). A 2D version was released online for a less-realistic tour, but the YouTube still gives the viewer 360-degree footage.
The 3D version takes you through an entire vacation, from your descent to the Hamilton Island airport, for a bird's-eye view of the Whitsunday Islands, to scuba diving among the sharks and sea turtles of the Great Barrier Reef and strolling through the gates of Qualia — the luxury world-class ecoresort at the northern tip of the island. A helicopter ride over the heart reef, a sunset over the cliffs of the island, a dip in the resort's infamous infinity pool, a yacht tour of Whithaven Beach, and a few rounds of golf at Hamilton Island’s Championship golf course are also perks that are included in the virtual reality tour.
The VR headset is available on Qantas first class flights and through certain travel agencies, but Samsung will be releasing the Hamilton Island and Great Barrier Reef App to download later this week for smartphone and Android users.
